A Therapist's Therapy

When I tell folks horses are "mind readers," or "mirrors to our soul," they often chuckle. Then, they get on. Or their kids get on and the new found confidence and skills slowly transfer to home life... When I say it again, I don't get as much of a chuckle as I get a smile and slow nod....
Horses feel our energy. They are so in-tune to themselves, others, and the earth that it never ceases to amaze me when they mold their energy to a situation. And I've been riding for 34.75 years, owned my own horses for 23.75 years. (Me holding on to every last day of being 39! 😆)
Recently, I was having "a day," and I had about 25 minutes before a lesson started. I took Jace's bridle out to ask him for a quick spin to get my head right before the student showed up. I felt his energy and he wasn't 100% interested, he was trying to take his afternoon snooze in the sun. I stopped a ways away, planning to fix my head on my own with another form of therapy or even ask another horse. He lifted his head, and looked at me. I smiled. He came over to me and offered his head. We went for a quick spin in the field and we both felt better afterward. 💓
The key takeaway is, if you listen to others, verbally and behaviorally, they will also listen to you. This horse and I have the deepest connection I've ever had in all my years with these phenomenal creatures. The blessing I've been given to share such a unique way of helping others build skills is one I give thanks for every day. To witness the growth in each and every student, big or small, is incredibly motivating and rewarding.
So thank you all for being a part of Painted Gaits with me!
